A Prayer for my Enemies

Published:
1.2K Views

Description

A Samurai in the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States Period) stands atop a mountian, reciting the Nembutsu* for the forthcoming enemies he will encounter and undoubtedly slay.

ca. 10" x 15"
Watercolor on Paper

Part of my Warriors and the Moon portfolio.

*The Nembutsu is a Pure Land Buddhist mantra as recited "Namo Amida Butsu" and translated as 'In the Name of Amida Buddha' is thought to invoke Amida Buddha's divine compassion in a trying moment. The shapes emerging from the Samurai's mouth are inspired from several traditional Japanese Sculptures where the idea of the Nembutsu is illustrated through tiny versions of Amida exiting the practitioner's mouth.

Hmm. Red armor, half of Sanada's crest, maybe, Sanada? :D

Either way, cool warrior. And the "Nembutsu" chant makes this piece more intriguing to me. : D
